Two ways to back up your home

Portable generator + inlet and interlock (or transfer switch): the budget option. Plug your generator into an outside inlet and power the circuits you choose.
Whole-home standby generator: runs on natural gas or propane and switches on automatically when the power goes out. Needs a pad, a gas line and an automatic transfer switch.

Never backfeed through an outlet

Plugging a generator into a dryer or wall outlet with a "suicide cord" can send power back onto the utility lines and seriously injure line workers, and it can start a fire in your home. A properly installed inlet and interlock or transfer switch is the safe way to do it.
